What is an entry?
An entry consists of one image.
Is there an entry fee?
No.
Does the photo have to have been taken this year?
No, your entry may be from any year.
Is there a limit to the number of photos that I can enter?
No, you may enter as many photographs as you like.
What format should I save my digital images?
Camera-made digital images or scans of slides or prints must be uploaded as JPG files. File size cannot be more than 10 mb. Although you don't have to upload them at submission time, high resolution versions of winning images must be available and suitable for publication at a minimum of 5x7 inches at 300 dpi (2100x1500 pixels).
Can I enter if I live outside of the U.S.?
Except where prohibited by law, international entries can be submitted.
Can my entry be of a location outside of the United States?
Yes, only if that location is within Canada or Mexico. The contest focuses on North American native plants.
What are my chances of winning?
That depends upon the number of submissions. Last year there were more than 2,500 submissions.
Will my images be sold?
No. You retain copyright to your photograph and the sponsors may not sell your photo entry for a fee. All entries may be posted online so that viewers may view all competing entries. And winning entries may be used in connection with the Contest and promotion of the Contest after the date the winners are notified.
When I submit a photo to the photo contest, what rights does the Wildflower Center have to my submission?
The Wildflower Center will have the nonexclusive, perpetual right to use your image in connection with the contest and promotion of the contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to: display at a potential exhibition of winners; publication of a book featuring select entries in the contest; publication in Wildflower magazine or online, highlighting entries or winners of the contest. Please read through the official photo contest rules for further information on the rights you grant when submitting a photograph to the Wildflower Center photography contest.
When will the winners be announced?
Winners will be contacted in September for high resolution art and captions. Image(s) will be published in the winter 2011 issue of Wildflower magazine as well as at www.wildflower.org
How do I submit a photo to the photo contest?
You must first create a contest account and follow instructions for uploading images online.
I have a log in and password from last year's photo contest? Why isn't it working?
We apologize for the inconvenience, but you must register again.
How do I know that you've received my entry?
You will receive an email letting you know that we have received your entry.
I accidentally uploaded the wrong photo. Can I delete my entry and submit a new photo?
No, once a photo has been uploaded, it can't be removed; however you can upload your image as a second entry.
How many photos may I submit?
There is no limit to the number of entries. You may submit as many photos as you like, in one or more of these categories: Botanical, Landscape, People with Wildflowers, Under 18 and Black and White.
Do I have to be a certain age to enter the contest?
You must be over 18, unless you enter an image in the Under 18 category.
I can't remember which photographs I've already submitted. Can you tell me which of my photos you've received?
You will receive an email letting you know that your entry has been posted to the site.
I'd like to enter a photo that has previously been published. Is that allowed?
Yes, you may enter a photo that has previously been published.
Will my photography be seen online?
Yes.
Do photos have to be taken with a digital camera?
Submitted photos do NOT have to be digital photos from a digital camera. Any digital scan will do, as long as the end result is a JPG or JPEG file. You may submit scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographs taken with traditional cameras.
What should I include in the description of my photograph?
The location and name of the plant - including your best understanding of its botanic or Latin name.
Are captions fact-checked for accuracy?
Information about winning photographs will be thoroughly fact checked before it appears in Wildflower magazine or online where the image is announced as a winner.
Are release forms required when submitting a photograph to the photo contest?
By submitting a photograph to the Wildflower Center Photography Contest you warrant that you are the owner of the image, that you alone own the copyright, and that you have obtained any necessary third-party releases. If your photograph is selected as a winner of the contest, you may be asked to submit a personal release, a location release, or an artist release. Please do not send any releases unless we've asked you to.
Do photos of children require personal release forms?
Yes, if the children are recognizable (see answer above). But personal release forms for anyone under the age of majority must be signed by the subject's legal guardian—not by the child. Download our printable photo release form.
Why won't my images upload?
