Botanical Research Institute of Texas The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) is a global institute for the conservation and preservation of botanical heritage through education, research, scientific publications and collections. Nationally recognized as a leader in botanical and environmental education, BRIT scientists also do research to make progress towards an orderly understanding of the plant world. Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute The mission of the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute is to promote public awareness, appreciation, and concern for the natural diversity of the Chihuahuan Desert through research and education. The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute was incorporated in January of 1974 as an independent non-profit, scientific and educational organization. The purpose of the organization is to expedite scientific investigation pertaining to the natural sciences and the Chihuahuan Desert region and to create public awareness of the natural phenomena to be found there. Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield An extension of the Denver Botanic Garden, Chatfield is a Nature Preserve with 750 acres of native flora encompassing several ecosystems and ten acres of wetlands. The preserve also hosts a 19th century ranch, a farm, a one-room schoolhouse, and two miles of nature trails offering excellent birding opportunities. Florida Native Plant Society The Florida Native Plant Society has over 2,900 members in 26 chapters dedicated to preserving, conserving, and restoring the native plants communities of the Sunshine State. Native Plant Center at Westchester Community College, The The Native Plant Center at Westchester Community College is dedicated to educating people about the importance of wildflowers and native plants of the Northeast. As the first national affiliate of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas, we extend the educational and environmental concepts of the Texas Center to this region. As a community resource, we share information on choosing, growing, and maintaining native plants. We sponsor classes in the spring and fall and host a yearly Wildflower Symposium featuring nationally known speakers. As a botanical garden, we have begun the Lady Bird Johnson Demonstration Garden on the Westchester Community College campus, containing native species which will thrive in the Northeast. There is no better way to learn about and understand these plants than by watching them grow, mature, flower and seed. Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants, Inc. is a not-for-profit nursery and organization dedicated to preserving native plants of California through education, promotion and restoration of California landscapes, and the propagation and sale of California native plants to the public. In 2003, the foundation celebrated 100 years since Theodore Payne opened his first nursery and started selling California native plants and seeds. Theodore Payne came to Los Angeles in 1893 and fell in love with the California flora. He urged the use of California native plants and lectured across the state on preserving landscapes native to California. By the time he retired in 1958, Payne had made over 400 species of native plants available to the public.
